Surgical Stapler Performance in Challenging Lung Tissue - a pioneering study to do bilateral resection

A 2026 prospective randomized trial from University Hospital Basel compared the AEON Endostapler against the Echelon Flex Powered Plus in lung volume reduction surgery for patients with severe lung emphysema.

Results showed an air leak incidence of 35.3% versus 60%, median closure time of 14.3 hours versus 93.2 hours, and total air leak volume at 32% of the powered comparator.

This video presents the key clinical findings from Macharia-Nimietz et al., published in Interdisciplinary Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, 2026.

What Surgeons Say About AEON

Real feedback from surgeons using AEON™ across thoracic, HPB, bariatric, and colorectal procedures

THORACIC

I started using AEON in 2021 and have done many hundreds of cases. In two years of using Lexington, I have witnessed more advances in surgical stapling than in the preceding two decades.

THORACIC

I have been blown away by Lexington’s performance in LVRS. In patients with late-stage emphysema, we have seen a significant reduction in prolonged air leaks since switching to AEON with the 60mm Orange Short Tip cartridge.

THORACIC

In my experience, you get the whole package with Lexington Medical, proven by high-quality products and responsiveness to surgeons’ needs. The AEON Endostapler has performed very well, including in complex lobectomies and segmentectomies – and when in my hands it undeniably feels like a well-engineered product.

THORACIC

I perform most thoracic resections via a robotic approach. Since switching to AEON™, I have been very pleased with my results. I’ve had excellent outcomes from the standpoint of hemostasis and lung aerostasis, and I have complete trust in the Lexington stapler.

What’s impressed me is the technical assistance my team and I have gotten from Lexington. My AEON™ representative’s strong clinical knowledge and product expertise has allowed me to integrate many of AEON’s proprietary features in the OR, including the gear mechanism for a smoother, more controlled firing which is especially critical on the PA and PV, and the continuous angulation for better positioning around constricted lung anatomy.

BARIATRIC

We have seen excellent staple formation with the AEON endostapler. The unique dual firing gear allows for slow, controlled firing resulting in the best hemostasis I’ve seen and a low risk for post-operative complications for our patients.

BARIATRIC

Prior to using AEON, we performed testing on excised stomach specimens to evaluate both staple formation and risk of leaks. The AEON consistently outperformed the other staplers and we quickly became very comfortable with the product.

GENERAL SURGERY

The staple line was gorgeous, very hemostatic. I was very pleased with how it turned out and can’t wait to continue to use it.

UROLOGY

I have been using the Lexington powered stapling system for approximately two years and have been highly satisfied with its performance across a range of laparoscopic procedures, including donor nephrectomies, nephrectomies for cancer, and cystectomies. The ability to deploy multiple staple cartridge sizes using a single handle provides valuable intraoperative flexibility and efficiency. In my experience, the device has delivered consistently reliable staple lines with excellent haemostasis, contributing to favourable surgical outcomes.

SURGICAL ONCOLOGY

What excites me about AEON™ is that it’s the first significant upgrade to stapling platforms I’ve seen in my many years of practice—something I’ve long hoped for. For surgeons who prioritize precision, this is the optimal stapling platform.

BARIATRIC

The AEON endostapler works great. I and my three partners have been very satisfied with the clean, beautiful staple lines. Previously, I was frustrated by other companies for their yearly price increases with no real noteworthy product improvements.

BARIATRIC

This stapler will be a game-changer and bring stapling to a new level. The powered stapler is very ergonomic, lightweight, and extremely easy to use, all while producing an extremely hemostatic staple line.

THORACIC

Using AEON™, I really liked having the confidence that I could use one stapler on gastric and esophageal tissue, as well as lung tissue and vessels all with the same handle, and with all the different reload options.

Thoracic Surgeon, Texas Oncology

HPB

In pancreatic surgery, our unit has seen a three-fold reduction in pancreatic leak rate for lateral/distal pancreatectomy, which has had a positive knock-on effect with a reduction in length-of-stay and morbidity of patients. We certainly consider it a superior product – the Rolls Royce for HPB surgeons.

BARIATRIC

It is very reassuring how Lexington has incorporated robotics and automation not only into manufacturing but also into the many quality checks to reduce human error. AEON’s gear allows for slow, controlled movement and more complete tissue compression. The result is in the hundreds of cases I’ve used Lexington, I haven’t had any stomach serosal splitting. We’ve been using staplers for 20 years and nobody thought to incorporate a gear. This invention translates into a huge clinical difference.

Prof Rishi Singhal, MD, FRCS

Consultant Bariatric & Upper GI Surgeon, Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, University Hospital Birmingham, UK.

Headshot of Prof Rishi Singhal, MD, FRCS. User of AEON surgical staplers.

BARIATRIC

As an early adopter of the AEON endostapler, we’ve been fortunate to observe and be part of product evolution over a relatively short period of time. Namely, we have found the new dual firing gear allows for much smoother, easier firing in the thicker tissue of the stomach.
